Family Historian
Family Historian (FH) is a genealogy application.
FH includes a direct import option that creates an FH project by reading a TMG database and without using a GEDCOM transfer. You should compare the direct import results to the results using a GEDCOM file written by TMG to GEDCOM (T2G) and decide which method produces the best results for you.
Template Notes
Susan Johnston created the original version of this template and tested with version 6.2.7 of FH.
Everything written by T2G in the GEDCOM file is accessible in FH from the "All" tab associated with a record (person, source, etc.).
Citation Reference
FH has no citation field that is equivalent to TMG's Citation Reference. You have two alternatives.
- You can export the Citation Reference value into the "Text From Source" field by setting the Tag Names.Citation Reference Tag to "
DATA.TEXT
"."
DATA.TEXT
" is a special value that TMG to GEDCOM recognizes as a combination of parent/child GEDCOM recordsDATA
andTEXT
. - You can export the Citation Reference value into the citation note by setting the Tag Names.Citation Reference Tag to "
NOTE
".
The template uses the first alternative. You can change the Tag Names.Citation Reference Tag to "NOTE" to use the second alternative.
Dates
FH does not support sort dates. They are not included in the GEDCOM export file.
Exhibits
FH does not honor primary indicators, so the template sets Exhibits.Include Primary Indicators to unchecked. T2G writes the primary person exhibit first, and FH makes the first exhibit primary, so the primary person exhibit is set properly by FH.
The image caption field becomes the Title. TMG's Description field is exported using a NOTE
GEDCOM record, but the value does not appear in FH.
Families
The template sets Families.Primary Only to unchecked so non-primary relationships are included.
Flags
The template sets Flags.Flags to "Export as EVEN/TYPE". TMG flags become events in FH.
The template sets Flags.Flag Name Prefix to "Flag:".
The template sets Flags.Flag Value Prefix to "V-". This avoids a problem where FH discards flag values that are set to "Y".
The template sets Flags.Living Flag to "Export as EVEN/TYPE" and Flags.Omit Value '?' to checked. You may wish to modify those settings based on your preferences.
GEDCOM Format
FH does not recognize primary indicators, so the template sets GEDCOM Format.Include Primary Indicators to unchecked.
GEDCOM Tag Names
The template sets Tag Names.Citation Reference Tag to "DATA.TEXT
". See the Citation Reference section above.
The template sets Tag Names.Formatted Source Tag to "TEXT
". See the Sources section below.
The template sets Tag Names.Person Role Tag to "ROLE
". See the Roles section below.
Gender
FH defines sex as either "M
" or "F
". A "U
" for unknown sex in TMG is loaded as uncategorized data in FH, accessible from the individual’s "All" tab.
Names
FH does not recognize primary indicators, so the template sets Names.Include Primary Indicators to unchecked.
TMG's name types, such as "Name-Baptism", are loaded as uncategorized data and are accessible in an individual's "All" tab.
Places
FH will import "master place" records, so the template sets Places.Include Master Place List to checked. Place exhibits will be imported.
Printer Codes
FH does not recognize text formatting. Keep the printer codes if you want to see TMG's original formatting.
Roles
The template sets Tag Names.Person Role Name to ROLE
which is what FH expects.
All roles are imported correctly except those used for P1. P1 roles are loaded by FH as uncategorized data and are accessible in an individual's "All" tab.
Sources
The template sets Sources.Include Formatted Source to checked. It also sets Tag Names.Formatted Source Tag to "TEXT
", and FH loads the formatted source into its "Text from Source" field.
Another alternative is to set Sources.Use Formatted Source as TITL to checked and also set Sources.Include Source Parts to checked. This would place the formatted source in the FH source title field and include all TMG source elements in the FH source's "All" tab, where it is accessible and can be queried.
